Discovering Your Passion: Journey to Personal Fulfillment

From a very young age, my fascination with making videos was undeniable. It was clear to me that I wanted to work in the film industry. Determined to bring my vision to life, I expressed to my parents my desire to create films. My dad gifted me a video camera, and I took charge, not only directing but also assuming (main) acting roles, shooting, and editing, often with reluctant participation from my friends and family. I couldn't comprehend why no one shared my enthusiasm for the craft.

Only later in life did I realise the incredible fortune of having a passion that came naturally to me, without the need for a challenging search. Hopefully, this article will offer some guidance to those still seeking their passions!

Self-reflection

The first step in finding your passion is introspection. Take the time to reflect on your interests, values, and strengths. What activities make you lose track of time? What brings you joy and fulfilment? Consider your dreams and activities that have consistently captivated your attention. Identifying patterns and themes in your life can provide clues about your passions. For me, the biggest indicator by far is when I lose track of time because it means I’m one hundred percent invested in what I’m doing, and that definitely doesn’t happen all the time.

Leave your comfort zone where it belongs

To find your passion, it's essential to step out of your comfort zone and explore a variety of experiences. I believe this is precisely one of the biggest hindrances for most people: being afraid to take risks and pursue something they truly enjoy. So, engage in activities that intrigue you, even if they seem unrelated to your current pursuits. Attend workshops, join clubs, chat with different types of people or volunteer in different fields. This exposure will broaden your horizons, allowing you to discover new interests and talents you might not have considered before.

Curiosity

Curiosity is a powerful driver in the pursuit of passion. Cultivate a mindset of curiosity and open-mindedness (very important!). Ask questions, seek knowledge, and be willing to learn from others. Many people could have access to a wealth of information and knowledge if they only desired it. Asking questions and learning from those who are ahead of you is essential! Besides, it's always enjoyable to pass on knowledge. Also, explore different subjects, hobbies, and industries. The more you explore, the more likely you are to stumble upon something that truly captivates you.

Emotional response

Pay attention to your emotional responses when engaging in different activities. Notice the ones that evoke a sense of excitement, enthusiasm, or fulfilment and the ones that don’t. Your emotions serve as indicators of what resonates with you and cannot be faked. Be mindful of the activities that bring you the most joy and make you feel alive.

Mentors

As I briefly mentioned earlier in the text, connecting with mentors or individuals who have found their passion can be incredibly valuable. Seek guidance from those who have travelled a similar path and can offer insights. Attend conferences, seminars, or networking events related to your areas of interest. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can support and challenge you. My biggest growth occurred when I had mentors who provided straightforward feedback without sugarcoating and were invested in my work. Being able to receive feedback is important for development!

Passions can change over time, so be open to the possibility of discovering new interests along the way. Starting with one passion may lead you to another and open doors you never knew existed. I have discovered numerous ways of earning through my profession that I never considered before I started. And, it might sound cliché but try to open the door, even if it's just a crack, to a more fulfilling life, where your passion(s) guide you toward personal growth and happiness.
